A perspective on personal learning
Personal learning helps learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to 
• set their own learning goals;
• manage the content and processes of their learning; and
• communicate with others in the process of learning with multiple opportunities to leverage new technologies.

This is a dramatic shift from the failures of the outcomes-based education movement of the late 80s and early 90s has been replaced by emphases on content standards by national organizations (NCTM), U.S. D.O.E. (National Reading Panel) and states. These artifacts of a bygone era attempt to hold fast to an archaic perception of education designed to prepare students to relive the past of current adults. This demonstrates the enormous gap between adult and student relevance. I am suggesting adult conceptualization of what is relevant for the youth of today is cemented in an adult past not in a relevant youthful future. In essence, we are preparing the youth of today for an adult world that no longer exists.
